Let's get varial flip on lock down.
Time to learn one of your first technical tricks. Varial flips are a really exciting trick to learn. It looks a lot harder than it actually is, so don’t worry. If you are having problems, once you learn the secrets to it, you’ll find it much easier. This trick isn’t for beginners. If you still can’t ollie just stop. Go back. Use the little button in your browser that lets you go to the previous page. Or better, hit the little x in the corner and go skate! Learn your basics. Then come back. Here’s a little checklist which I would consider the basics. • Pushing on your board • Maneuvering around the street and objects • Ollies • Shove it, 180, kickflip, heelflip • A good sense of landing tricks while skating around
Some of this may be optional to start learning this trick, but I feel you should be comfortable with all this before moving on here. Ok, ok, I won’t preach anymore. Let’s learn this man. Get your board. Put your foot on the tail. I put it in position like I’m going to do a shove it. Your front foot goes at a 45 degree angle and in the middle of your board. This is where it gets a little bit different from tricks you may be used to. A lot of people make it sound like varial flip is just doing a shove it and a kickflip. Don’t fall into this mind set! These tricks are very different. Let me give you a new idea on how to land this trick. I’ve heard people say things like spin your board and then flip it like you would a kickflip. This just isn’t how I do it. I don’t know if I’m doing something wrong here, but I am pretty good at varial flip so I don’t care if it’s different. It works great, so listen up. I think of this trick as one fluid motion. Get into your crouched position and get a little speed. I find this trick really hard to do just standing still. You need to be moving at least a bit. Now you’re going to do two things at once. One is pushing your tail down and jumping to get you body height. The other is kicking your front foot out. It’s not like doing a kickflip. You’re going to slide your foot just like a kickflip, but don’t use the curve at the nose of the board. My foot will flick off the side of the board. If you’re doing it right, it looks like your feet are starting to do a split in the air. Once you get it right with the amount of force you need to do that’s it. That’s all there is to it. Your board should just flip right and then you’ll find the bolts and land. A good tip I have for you though: My back foot doesn’t do the same motion as a shove it. It’s more of an angled ollie. My foot is positioned like a shove it, but just goes down like an ollie. For me, this seems to be the perfect place for the trick. So, that’s all there is to the trick. Get out there and practice. It can take some time to get it right. It will be worth it though. It’s really not too hard if you have the right mindset. Once you land it you’ll understand how easy it really is! Keep up the hard work. Landing a varial flip is definitely a huge milestone in skateboarding. Congratulations on making it this far!
