Have you heard some people use the words fakie, nollie, and switch?
Regular, fakie, nollie, and switch are different ways you can do tricks on your skateboard. It involves using a different stance or different end of your board.
If you’ve read my article on skating stances, you know there are two stances in skateboarding. For the rest of this article I will assume that you ride regular for simplicity.
The first thing you need to understand is riding switch on your skateboard. This is when you ride in the stance you do not usually use. So if you ride regular, this would mean riding goofy to do tricks. It can make a simple trick, which you always land, into an extremely hard trick to land. It will take a long time for you to be able to ride well both ways. It’s well worth trying though. It’s very fun being able to ride well both ways.
Then there are two other ways to ride your board. Nollie is one. If you’re riding your board and you want to do a nollie trick, you need to move to the front of your board. So, if you are riding regular, then you need to shift your feet forward so that your left foot is on the nose and your right foot will do the tricks. Nollie tricks are very hard to learn in the beginning. If you can’t ride switch, you probably won’t be able to do nollie tricks.
Don’t worry quite yet, Fakie tricks are much easier than nollie tricks. They seem hard to people who don’t know much about skateboarding, but they are pretty easy. I think this is why they are called fakie. They fake out people who don’t know much about skating.
These tricks can be accomplished by going into a switch stance and then moving to the front of your board. Sounds hard right? Not really. Fakie tricks are just like doing regular tricks. You will find that you can probably do almost any trick that you can regularly.
Don't get fakie, nollie, and switch confused with riding stance! Click here to see why people are confused when they first learn how to skateboard.
You could also say you are doing switch nollie tricks. You wont hear people say this however. It makes no sense when you can just say fakie.
It’s a lot to think about. You can actually do one trick four different ways. It makes skateboarding fun though. You can develop a certain style of skateboarding by learning to do your tricks in different ways. I love landing tricks using a different stance. They can lead to really technical sequences, which I like doing.
So next time you think you have your kickflip down perfect, try a switch flip or a nollie flip. Try it out, you might like being able to do another trick after you just landed one in a different stance. It can look really cool and impressive too. These kinds of things aren’t for everyone though. Some of my friends think they’re dumb and always skate one way. You will just have to find out for yourself.
Another note I wanted to put here is about a game we sometimes play. It’s like playing s.k.a.t.e. (which is like playing h.o.r.s.e. in basketball). We call it irregular skate. We only allow tricks that are switch, nollie, or fakie. It can force you to learn how to do some new tricks and can be loads of fun, even if you’re not good. Have fun with this, be relaxed, and skate on everyone!
